Today is a district professional development day for all certificated staff. Our elementary teachers will be meeting at Robert Gray beginning at 8:00 a.m. for training on classroom discipline and higher level questioning skills. These will apply for all grade levels and help support the work that was begun this summer implementing AVID in the elementary schools.
The secondary schools will be working in a number of areas including AVID strategies, student data review and analysis of learning styles to better support all students in learning. Tomorrow a team from the district will be attending a training put on by the Association of Washington School Principals (AWSP) on the new changes in discipline laws for K-12 schools. It will be informative with a review of two new policies that will replace our current Policy 3200.
Upcoming college visits at AHS.
We will have a new School Resource Officer (SRO) in the district beginning October 31. Ron Morella retired from the Aberdeen Police Department effective October 28. The new officer is Robert Green. Officer Green has been trained as an SRO and worked in Montesano for a number of years. He was also the Montesano DARE Officer. It will be great to have him on board in a few weeks.
(Officer Green will be the Aberdeen SD new SRO beginning in November)
Next week is conference week in the district. All our schools will be on early release during the week with parent-student conferences taking place in the afternoon and evening. We work to schedule evening conferences on different days to help maximize any interpreters we may need for families who do not speak English. For more information on conferences, please check with your child's school.
Our fall sports are wrapping up this week and next. The last home soccer match was this past Tuesday at Stewart Field and the final home volleyball match is scheduled for next Thursday, October 27 in Sam Benn Gym. The final home football game is next Friday, October 28, at Stewart Field. Our winter sports at the high school begin on Monday, November 14, 2016. This is includes boys and girls basketball, boys and girls wrestling, boys swimming and our new girls bowling team. Miller sports for season 2 begin Monday, October 24. The sports are girls volleyball and boys and girls wrestling.
(AHS Seniors ready for their final AHS home game at Stewart Field)
Dee Anne Shaw has sent in the notification to the Daily World outlining the process for the district Request for Proposals (RFP) for superintendent search consultants. It will run for two weeks. Proposals will be due on Tuesday, November 15, at 2:00 p.m. Once the school board selects a search consultant, they will post the timeline for school and community meetings, various updates, interviews of candidats and final selection of the new superintendent. The new superintendent will officially begin July 1, 2017.
Thanks again and have a great weekend.
