Dear parents/guardians:

The 2016-2017 school year is underway!  I hope that you and your family enjoyed the summer.  We are looking forward to the new school year!  I am writing this letter to inform you of some exciting things that lie ahead for this year.

McDermoth is embarking on implementing a schoolwide AVID Elementary program.  This program is affiliated with programs that are currently being employed at the junior high and high school.  The purpose of AVID is to help all students to become college-ready throughout organization, higher-level thinking skills and rigor.  We will begin implementation this year in grades 3-6, and will gradually bring the program to grades K-2 in subsequent school years.  McDermoth's instructional goals around AVID Elementary include using higher order thinking skills, increased student discussion within inquiry based lessons.  Our staff will be focused on supporting your child to improve his/her organizational skills with the use of a three ring binder and weekly planner.

Additional security cameras will be added to our current surveillance system.  We will also be continuing to improve our Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports program (PBIS) to make McDermoth even safer as we are committed to student safety as our paramount duty.

McDermoth welcomed some new staff and reassignments this year.  Heather Trader is our new secretary.  Mr. Doyle is teaching 5th grade.  Ms. Ulbin is teaching 1st grade.  Ms. George and Ms. Pfeiffer are our new Kindergarten teachers.  We have added many additional paraeducators including Heidi McMullen for additional student support systems within the K.I.D.S. room.

We have purchased Chromebooks for every 2nd grade student at our school throughout the day.  We have also purchased additional Chromebooks for 1st grade as well as kindergarten classroom use.  We have replaced the aging computers in the library to all new Chromebooks and will have iPads for every kindergarten and 1st grade student to use throughout the day.

We are looking forward to a successful school year for your student.  Student success depends on a strong partnership between parents and school.  If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the office at 360-538-2120.

Sincerely,
Brandon Winkelman
